I know it’s been said before, but it looks like it might be different this time. The European Parliament has finally agreed with the mobile operators that roaming voice and data charges will be abolished across the EU by June 2017.
The period of interim charges starts in April 2016. During this period, they will only be able to charge a maximum of:
- €0.05 (3.5p) extra per minute for calls
- €0.02 extra per SMS sent
- €0.05 extra per megabyte of data used
This is a 75% reduction on current charges!
It isn’t often that we agree with an MEP, but we have to agree with Guy Verhofstadt, who said the “great roaming rip-off is being brought to an end”
Subject to whatever you may think, the Amiigo team thinks that is great news. We have always thrown our voice into the ring to say that the cost of communicating when doing business internationally has been too high. Amiigo was developed to bring down those costs.
Now we will just have to help those who are doing business outside of the EU, or indeed, making calls from within the EU to countries outside. Remember, the destination of the call counts just as much as the starting point.
